Mary Lou Hess New Albany INAfter being introduced to etching I knew printmaking was the way I wanted to work. The challenge of controlling the the variables and expecting the unexpected from the acid is exciting and a sign to always be ready for a gift.

I see texture, shapes and space in nature. Landscape is an excuse for making an etching. To see a commonplace thing and make it my own by building or designing an image is my goal. I am pleased if one of my intaglios, not looking like anything but an etching, lives through its own inherent qualities and has a spirit all its own.

I have been a printmaker more than 25 years. I attended Saint Mary of-the-Woods College and studied with Virginia Fritzmartin Bruner of Pratt Institute and Susan Moffett of Indiana University.

I use nitric acid on zinc plate to make my prints ... this includes dry point, open bite, softground and aquatint techniques to achieve the desired effects. I do all my own printing on a Laszlo Universal Handpress with a 16 in. roller and a 30 in. bed. I use Rives etching paper. My editions are 20 to 30 prints. My studio is in my home.

My work has been widely exhibited in E.Lansing, Cincinnati, Chicago, Milwaukee, Richmond VA, State College PA .... also the Indianapolis Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin National Small Print Exhibition, the Portland Museum in Louisville as well as the Carnegie Center in New Albany. I have won regional and national recognition, including awards from Purdue University, Ohio Valley Annual, the Northern Illinois Art Fest and the Miniatures Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washinton D.C. and numerous art fairs.I live with my husband, Joe Modica, in my family home on Silver Creek in New Albany, Indiana. I have three sons, Jerry, Matthew and Lou Hess

I collaborated with Dianne Aprile, journalist and author on the faculty of Spalding University, on a book, THE EYE IS NOT ENOUGH: On Seeing and Remembering.
